Price, rules, and risk

Is Project Diablo 2 free?

The mod costs nothing. The game underneath it does not. The Support FAQ says Project Diablo 2 is a free mod that requires a legitimate install of legacy Diablo II and Lord of Destruction, not Resurrected, from Blizzard.

I read the download page, the rules, and the FAQ security note on the same day. I can tell you what those pages require. I cannot tell you how a court would treat the mod, because none of those pages is a legal opinion, and I am not adding one.

Free mod, paid game

Download the launcher from the official download page. Do not pay a third party for a “PD2 client.” The team does not sell the game files.

Rule 4 on the official rules page treats a cracked CD key as a permanent ban. Buying a legitimate copy later lets you make a new account. It does not unlock the banned one.

What “safe” can mean here

The FAQ says the launcher can trip antivirus tools. The suggested response is an exclusion on the whole Diablo II folder, and a download that came from the official site. That is not a promise that every file on the internet named PD2 is clean. I am not inventing a VirusTotal score.

Real-money trading, D2JSP, Tradia, and cross-game trading are permanent bans under the rules. Trade stays in-game or on the official site. This guide does not broker items.

Questions

Is PD2 down?

There is no public status API on the pages I checked. The FAQ points players at the Discord announcements channel when the realm is offline.

Is a cracked install allowed if I only play offline?

The rules do not make that exception. A cracked CD key is listed as a permanent ban.

Does the team sell items?

No. The rules ban real-money trading. The official market is the trade surface, and it sits behind a login.
