FAQ sections 1.11 and 3.3
Sound not working
Two different failures get called a sound error. One crashes when Windows has no usable output device. The other plays music and ambience and drops the rest of the effects. The Support FAQ splits them. I am not adding a claim about 5.1 or 7.1, because the page does not list supported channel layouts.
I copied the -ns warning carefully. The FAQ says adding -ns to Game.exe skips sound and can crash when you change acts, and that single player can get stuck. It is a test, not a setting to leave on. I have no screenshot of the sound panel. The steps are the ones in the FAQ text.
Crash as soon as sound starts
Unhandled Exception or Halt, tied to audio, means the FAQ wants you in Windows sound settings and Device Manager. Pick a real output device. If the driver is flagged, fix that before you touch PD2. When you change acts and crash, the FAQ says to remove -ns and make sure a device exists.
Music, but no spell sounds
Section 3.3 says to change the surround setting, switch output device, try ddraw with windowed mode (-w), and turn compatibility mode on. Do those one at a time so you know which one mattered.
- Temporary silence test: add -ns to Game.exe.
- If the crash stops, the audio path is a useful lead, but this does not identify the device or driver as the cause. Check the output device and audio software.
- Remove -ns. Leaving it on is how act changes crash, per the FAQ.

Questions
Is -ns safe?
Only as a test. The FAQ says it causes crashes on act changes and can block single player. Take it off when the device works.
Does PD2 support surround?
The FAQ tells you to change the surround setting when effects are missing. It does not publish a supported layout. I am not filling that in.
